My Experience at Gurukul

During my 3 week stay at Dhrupad Gurukul Kathmandu I had daily singing lessons with Guru Vishal ji. As a guitarist and music teacher from Australia, I undertook this talim with the intention of researching the methodology and spiritual practice of Dhrupad. The atmosphere was peaceful and I was warmly welcomed into the gurukul community, forming lasting friendships with extended Gurukul community.
Guruji patiently imparted the nuances of raaga to me through alaap improvisation and compositions passed down to him from his gurus, the renowned Gundecha Brothers. I especially appreciated Guruji's thoughtful guidance into the philosophy and practice of Naad Yoga, "sur samadhi" and "swar sadhana", practices which I have continued to this day. Developing an approach to music not just as entertainment but as a spiritual practice has had lasting transformative effects on me, including health benefits. This learning experience has deepened my love of music while also improving my vocal ability and musical ear. I have since returned to Australia and incorporated several aspects of dhrupad into my playing and teaching style with positive results.
My stay at the Gurukul accommodation was comfortable and very conducive to learning, with a tanpura in each room for riyaz, modern facilities and kitchen. Kathmandu Gurukul is an oasis located in a beautiful area a short drive from the tourist areas of Kathmandu, with lovely cafés, restaurants and shops nearby. Kathmandu Dhrupad Gurukul is a hidden gem for anyone passionate about music, meditation and traditional cultural experiences. I look forward to returning soon.
